It comes as a plug-in that syncs the comments on any given blog with their servers. Some sort of automated comment back-up, I guess. The plug-in features comment threading (comments appear as conversations, like in Gmail, not as chronological lists), replying to comments by email and importing and exporting comments to other commenting systems. So far so good. I really like it.

However, there does not appear to be a CSS file and it actually says on their website that they don’t recommend messing around with the CSS as the plug-in is in active development.

As Hugh has already pointed out, the design looked a little messed up. Thanks to Enzo, who suggested a small addition to our own little stylesheet, this issues has now been resolved and the comments no longer break the layout of the website.

So, no excuses, knock yourself out comment away.

I downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 a couple of days ago and today finally found the time to burn it to CD to try out the Live CD.

Hugh suggested that Broadcom Wifi might now work in Ubuntu without requiring all the fiddling stuff that has so far kept me from using Linux.

Everything worked fine until, somewhat expectantly, I tried to access the Internet. When I tried to add my wifi network (because it was not detected automatically) the network settings window crashed and needed to be force quit. The second time round it worked alright and allowed me to add the details of a wifi network. However, it did nothing.

I am willing to concede that this may simply be because Ubuntu was not installed, but only running from live CD.

However, I am not going to install Ubuntu unless I can be 100% sure that I can use the Internet without requiring a degree in fiddling.

Can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong?

I have begun to write my first own WordPress Theme. It is based on the Starkers Blank Development Theme by Elliot Jay Stocks.

The beginnings are there. The header is as good as finished. You can sneak a peak at my other site.

I have upgraded my WordPress to version 2.6.3 and I expect that the results will be completely unnoticeable. Yes I know, it has been available for some time and I should have upgraded earlier. I was simply too emotionally attached to the previous version.

Meanwhile I am looking forward to version 2.7, which promises many great enhancements as well as a new Admin Interface.

Oh well, I get excited easily these days. Whoohooo!

Talking about excitement, as there are now so many wonderful JADE People in London we should have some sort of massive get-together. You know, the kind where everybody drinks lots of adult beverages.

This was the first time I saw a bullfight apart from on TV, but I was told that the Torero performed very badly. So much so in fact, that the viewing public in the end threw their seat-covers at him (see last photo).

Hello humans.

A couple of weeks ago I added simple delicious.com and digg com text links to my wordpress template. Now, every time I write a post, wordpress automatically adds a post-specific digg.com “digg this” and a delicious.com “bookmark this” link to the bottom of the post.

I did this because the links, widgets, buttons etc that delicious.com and digg.com provide for their users are too big, do not fit into my template and/or are not customisable enough. Having unsuccessfully searched far and wide for a how-to for simple customised text links, I decided to write a how-to of my own.

Before you start, it is important that you place the links between the code-snippets you can see below. If you don’t, the links will not be post-specific. They will instead just add your blog address, rather than the post’s permalink.

The following code should be applied to your index.php and the files that create your single posts and archives, normally single.php and archive.php

Adding a digg.com link:

<a href=”http://digg.com/submit?phase=2&url=<?php the_permalink() ?>&title=<?php the_title(); ?>”>Digg This</a>

This link can be styled using CSS just like any other html link.

In your index.php add the above code for the link somewhere between

<?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

and

<?php endwhile; ?>

Adding a delicious.com link:

<a href=”http://del.icio.us/post?url=<?php the_permalink() ?>&title=<?php the_title(); ?>” target=”_blank”>Bookmark This</a>

Again, this link can be styled using CSS and should be added in your index.php somewhere between

<?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

and

<?php endwhile; ?>

Del.icio.us has been relaunched as delicious.com, but the old domain still works in the link. I don’t know if this will work forever, and as soon as I know how to add the link with the new domain I will update this post.

Disclaimer: I am not a PHP guru. The stuff you see here worked for me, if it messes up your website, tough. Rant off in the forum if you like.
