going back to camden

We have already cleared out all our salvageable merchandise and today I am meeting one of our suppliers in Camden to clear up some old accounts.

This is one of the very few remaining commercial links I have with this part of the great city.

On other matters, I have not yet written anything about Boris and Ken but I am planning to, soon.

Oh, having played around with the Flickr Badge has reignited my interest in coding. I will try to play around with a few more interweb thingies.

the apprentice – fools, the lot of them

I just watched the first episode of The Apprentice, on BBC 1. Actually, it isn’t even over yet, but I don’t need to watch the rest. Every single one of the candidates is a fool. Regardless of their existing (doubtful) business experience, not one of them has inspired me in the slightest. I have already forgotten all their names. At least the last time Tre was annoying enough to be memorable.

I was just now trying to remember if any of the girls looked cute, but I failed as not even they inspired me enough to look at them a second time.

Selling fish may not be something anybody inspires to in that crowd, I cannot say that I do, but confusing pounds and kilos and selling under price due to stupidity is almost criminal.

I would have dismissed the lot and insisted on a new group of candidates.

The only credit I am willing to give anybody here is that the girls team started selling immediately, rather than fussing about for long.

Perhaps they are dumbing down the teams, just like they did with Big Brother.

I am struggling with myself to rustle up enough motivation to watch the second episode next week.

camden update

After Saturday’s desaster the market is still smouldering and around 3pm smoke was still escaping from the ashes.

It now appears as if parts of the outlying buildings have collapsed on top of the market’s main hall and the whole front of that part of the High Street may be in danger of collapse. So we will not be allowed back into the market until about Wednesday (at the earliest).

We will then have to see if anything remains to be salvaged.

More updates as I get them.

Somewhere in the middle of this armageddon is our family business. (Everybody is ok and accounted for. No need to worry.)

I guess I will not have to be at work tomorrow.

I will let the pictures speak for themselves for a while.

(Pictures were mostly nicked of news websites.)

pre-christmas chaos

The Christmas Season is in full swing… NOT!

In all my years of retail experience I have never seen as bad a Christmas

And it is not only us, the whole economy is suffering. Restaurants are announcing Profit Warnings, we can manage our business with 50% of last year’s staff levels, and the retail council is voicing fears of a serious slow down.

The overall mood is this:

Let’s postpone Christmas until April. Whatever happens, it appears to have been cancelled this December.

With all the economic horror stories bouncing about the news media, people simply seem to have stopped spending money. Last weekend, there were as many people there as ever, maybe even more, but their pockets were not lined with money.

When tourists do not even eat where they travel, a retail business may have to consider emigrating to warmer climes.
